April: Sexual Assault Awareness Month
One in four college women report surviving rape or attempted rape. As sisters and friends this issue is very near and dear to our hearts. We may never know just who this has affected in our own lives. The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. Each day, people witness a continuum of behaviors that range from being respectful and safe, to sexually abusive and violent. There are many things that you as a sorority woman can do to educate yourself and friends to prevent sexual assault or serve as the safety net when it does occur. Your first step is to start that conversation…don't be afraid to bring a speaker in to your chapter meeting to talk about a range of prevention focused topics like healthy relationships/communication, self defense, social safety, etc. In addition, recognize that there may be women in your very own chapter that may be victims of sexual assault be prepared to listen and believe in them. Prepare your chapter members by building awareness around local/campus wellness resources to help nurture a healthy collegiate experience or be ready when your sisters need you most.
